Materials in focus

Interior design office, Fiona Lynch, has designed each space to include material contrasts that honour heritage and embrace contemporary style. This approach pairs bold textures with refined finishes, creating interiors that feel distinctly local yet worldly and sophisticated. Tactile surfaces balance restrained finishes, while traditional artisanal elements ground the interiors in modern design thinking.

Each residence features contrasting materials, which reflect the site’s layered history. Here, warm textures are offset by sleek, contemporary surfaces. This interplay creates depth without excess, richness without ostentation. This vision preserves the building’s longstanding character while providing a distinctly contemporary backdrop, ensuring each home feels simultaneously timeless yet of the moment.

Fruits of our Labour

Behind every thoughtfully realised space is the seamless interplay between intent and creation. Here, collaborators reveal how their thinking has shaped each space and the experience of living within them.

“623 Collins Street will complete the revitalisation of the western CBD end of Collins Street with a high-quality mixed-use development that is in line with CBD’s shift towards becoming a multi-use destination at the heart of transport networks with access to a wide range of amenities, as well as cultural, sporting and educational institutions,”

Brandon Yeoh, Director, Sterling Global

A Sense of Place

At the intersection of Collins and Spencer stands a building of quiet distinction – an enduring example of architectural ambition. Known for its Renaissance Palazzo designs and Greek Revival influences, these design details established the site as one of architectural significance for more than a century.

As the former State Savings bank of Victoria, this corner building emerged from a pivotal moment in the state’s financial evolution. Established in 1896, the bank served a growing population eager to save and invest, helping families purchase homes, and becoming part of everyday life. Following Melbourne’s post-Gold Rush transformation, the bank’s commission became a strategic symbol of economic independence for the state.

Throughout this period, Collins Street transformed into the cultural heart of Melbourne, where artists and retailers brought the city to life each day and night. By the 1950s, prestige retail, live theatre, and café culture had sealed Collins Street’s identity as a place to see and be seen. Today, 623 Collins honours this legacy through refined residences that embrace the best of the past and the present.
